Ian Travers
Senior Consultant
Ian Travers specialises in archaeological and cultural heritage management, and commercial archaeology in particular, having been involved in heritage work and archaeological assessment programs in the UK and mid-Atlantic USA for over ten years. His expertise extends from desk based appraisals to full blown environmental impact assessments of both sub surface archaeology and built heritage, and is supported by a strong background in field investigation.
Prior to joining Context, Ian, a UK local, worked in his home country as a Senior Consultant for an international engineering and environmental consultancy. There he was responsible for the provision of heritage consultancy services to support planning applications and for the supervision of numerous environmental impact assessments (EIAs) for a variety of large, high profile developments.
Ian has worked closely with ecologists, landscape architects, engineers and agriculturalists, as well as other heritage professionals, and he brings developed capabilities in both ecology and agriculture to his role here at Context. Before becoming a consultant, Ian worked as field archaeologist in the UK and USA, whilst also undertaking research work in Greece and Uganda.
Since his recent relocation to Australia and joining the Context team Ian has familiarised himself with the legislation and policy relevant to heritage management in the Commonwealth of Australia, and the State of Victoria in particular, and is currently involved with the provision of heritage advice and the preparation of conservation management plans within this state.
In the UK Ian has had the opportunity to work on a number of high profile World Heritage sites in Cornwall, Liverpool and Edinburgh; he is now relishing the opportunity to apply his skills to Australian cultural heritage. Ian’s wide professional interests include industrial archaeology and that relating to mining and metallurgy in particular.
