Brimbank Heritage Design Guidelines
The newly launched Brimbank Heritage Design Guidelines 2009 will help property owners adapt heritage places for modern-day use while retaining their essential heritage qualities.
The general guidelines provide detailed advice on appropriate painting schemes, how to sympathetically alter and extend heritage buildings and what type of fencing is appropriate, among other issues.
There is also a guideline specifically for each of the eight heritage precincts in Brimbank, well-illustrated with local examples. Together these guidelines demonstrate the diverse and interesting heritage within the City of Brimbank.
Natica Schmeder, heritage advisor to Brimbank City Council, says: We wanted to give residents of each precinct a sense of what made that area, and their house, special. The guidelines also put Brimbank’s heritage policy into plain English, so applicants know what to expect during the planning process.
The eight precincts are: the ICI Residential Area, Deer Park; Concrete Housing Estate, Sunshine; Commonwealth Munitions Housing Estate, Sunshine; War Service Homes Estate, Albion; Railway Station Estate, Sunshine; Sunshine Commercial Heritage Area, Sunshine; and two McKay Housing Estates: Durham Road, Sunshine and King Edward Avenue, Albion.
You can find the precinct guidelines on the City of Brimbank’s website or download below. The general guidelines will be released around mid 2010.
