Celebrating migration heritage
Minister for Planning Matthew Guy spoke from the heart about his own migrant heritage at the recent celebration of Darebin’s rich heritage resulting from post-war migration. In the audience were many of the people who had participated in this pilot project, a part of Victoria’s Post 1940s Migration Heritage, a project initiated by Heritage Victoria and undertaken by Context with Sarah Rood (Way Back When), The Connies and Paul Michelle (Darebin Library).
The pilot was designed to apply the themes and methods developed in the state-wide project to a municipality. Case study places and communities included: Preston Market, St Joseph the Worker church (Reservoir), Edwards Park Lake, Preston Tramway Workshops, Punjabi Sikh community and the former Preston Gurdwara (temple). And on the outside wall of the Northcote Town Hall, the library’s wonderful collection of ‘images of migration’ were seen nightly.
