Shannon Nicholson joins Context

A warm welcome to Shannon Nicholson who has joined Context in the role of Indigenous intern. Shannon is a Wurundjeri descendant and is passionate about cultural heritage. She is currently studying Certificate 4 in Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management at La Trobe University. As well as working part-time at Context and studying, Shannon works at the Dandenong and District Aboriginal Co-operative as a Best Start program facilitator, and has previously worked in conservation land management with the Wurundjeri and Boonwurrung Land Councils.

With Context, Shannon is currently working on an Aboriginal Heritage Study for the City of Melbourne, an ambitious project designed to capture important stories, images and places into a spatial database for use by Aboriginal people, by schools, by visitors and by the City of Melbourne.

Shannon says about the CoM project:

I knew it would be a great opportunity to be a part of creating something really special, something that is going to leave a vivid impression in the minds of people who access the database. I’m a believer that cultural awareness is a very important step in joining both Indigenous and non Indigenous people together. Through accessing this database people will be able to extend their knowledge around Melbourne and its Traditional Owners.
