Vertical shopping
The ‘vertical shopping arcade’ of the Nicholas Building (Swanston St) was the latest fashion when it was designed in 1924 by Harry Norris. In the same ownership ever since, and maintained by the same architect for thirty years, the building is occupied by an eclectic variety of artists, craftspeople and designers. With Nigel Lewis, Context’s Conservation Management Plan established its significance and provided much-needed policy direction, and strategies for conservation, maintenance and upgrades. Context’s architectural historian Natica Schmeder brought her skills in architectural research to this project, creating a detailed analysis of the building’s development. Since then, Natica has published an article in the Winter 2008 issue of 'Spirit of Progress' on the technique of terra cotta facing or faience.
