Water for life

Have you spent much time this year thinking about the integral role of water supply in the economic and social development of Melbourne? We have! Context has been working closely with Melbourne Water to develop Stage 2 of the Regional Water Supply Heritage Study for Melbourne. The study has identified a large body of sites that reflect important aspects of the Melbourne region’s water supply heritage, dating from as early as the mid-nineteenth century. Everything from surviving water mains to weirs, tanks, caretaker’s residences and entire reservoirs and parklands has been documented and recommendations made.

The study will be a tool for Melbourne Water and Heritage Victoria to make informed decisions about how the places and objects associated with the historic development of Melbourne’s water supply may be identified, assessed and managed to ensure that they are conserved for future generations to enjoy. This is especially important given the complex pressures faced by water supply infrastructure, including the effects of climate change and the ability to meet future water supply needs.
