Auburn Village Heritage Guidelines

Auburn_project

Client: Boroondara City Council

Boroondara City Council set Context the task of creating guidelines for looking after heritage values of Auburn Village, a shopping area with well preserved Victorian buildings. Context’s proposal included community consultation and producing guidelines in plain English.

The project began with a review of a past heritage study for Auburn Village, re-assessing the cultural significance and defining precinct boundaries before producing draft guidelines. Context then consulted with community and stakeholders to ensure the guidelines met local needs as well as reflecting best practice. It was important to address often contentious issues such as demolition and subdivision as well as the usual concerns of restoration, renovation and alteration.

The guidelines created by Context will help Boroondara City Council and the wider community in preparing and assessing development applications for heritage places within the precinct. It will also enable the council and property owners to care for those places.
