Docklands Place Naming
Client: VicUrban (Docklands)
Docklands is Melbourne’s newest inner suburb. In 2003, Context was asked to develop a framework for naming its streets and places including reserves, roads, gardens and key features such as trees and plazas.
Place naming is complex and can provoke strong feelings. Context’s approach included consultation, working closely with the Docklands Authority and their specialist advisory committee, talking with Aboriginal community representatives, research using maps and other sources, and analyzing key themes. The results include a place naming policy, plus a list of existing and potential names for Docklands – many of which are imaginative and likely to create interest in their origins.
